Built a year earlier than the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453, the Rumelia Castle marks the determination of Sultan Mehmet II to capture the city. It stands right across the Anatolia Castle which was built by the young Sultan’s great-grandfather. The two fortresses where built for the same strategic purpose.
